Cold Brew Concentrate
To Serve
Equipment (optional listed as ingredients to ensure direction coverage)
Method
Cold Brew Concentrate
- 1
Combine coffee and water
Add 1 cup coarsely ground coffee to a large airtight jar or pitcher. Pour 4 cups cold filtered water over the grounds, ensuring all grounds are saturated. Gently stir for 10–15 seconds to fully submerge and wet the coffee.
- 2
Steep
Cover the jar or pitcher with a lid or plastic wrap and let steep at room temperature for 16–18 hours (up to 20 hours for slightly stronger flavor). Place in a cool, dark spot; refrigeration is optional but will slow extraction and yield a cleaner taste.
- 3
Strain the concentrate
After steeping, line a fine mesh sieve with cheesecloth (or use the sieve alone if very fine). Place the sieve over a large bowl or another pitcher. Pour the coffee and grounds through the sieve slowly, allowing the liquid to pass through. If using cheesecloth, you may need to pour in batches. For a clearer brew, strain a second time through fresh cheesecloth or a coffee filter.
- 4
Transfer and store
Transfer the filtered cold brew concentrate to a clean glass bottle or airtight container. Seal and refrigerate. Concentrate will keep well for up to 10–14 days; optimal flavor is within 7 days.
To Serve
- 5
Fill a serving glass with about 1 cup of ice cubes.
- 6
Pour 1/2 to 3/4 cup cold brew concentrate over the ice, depending on how strong you like it.
- 7
- 8
Sweeten if desired: add 1–2 teaspoons simple syrup or your preferred sweetener and stir until incorporated. Taste and adjust sweetness or dilution.
- 9
Serve immediately. Keep remaining concentrate refrigerated and use within 10–14 days.
Equipment Care
- 10
Rinse sieve and cheesecloth promptly after use to remove grounds. Wash jar, pitcher, and bottle with hot soapy water or run through dishwasher if dishwasher-safe.
