Whole fruit selection

Method

Whole fruit selection

  1. 1

Choose ripe, blemish-free fruit. Pick medium-sized apples, pears, and bananas that yield slightly to gentle pressure but are not mushy. Select oranges that feel heavy for their size and seedless grapes that are firm.

  2. 2

Rinse all fruit under cold running water. For apples, pears, and grapes, rub gently with your hands or a soft brush to remove surface residue. For grapes, remove from stems after rinsing and drain in a colander.

  3. 3

Dry fruit with a clean kitchen towel or paper towel. Drying prevents slipping and helps any optional dips adhere better.

  4. 4

If serving whole: arrange fruit on a serving plate or in individual portions. Place apples, bananas, pears, and oranges whole; place grapes in a small bowl or cluster on the plate.

Optional accompaniments

  1. 5

    Prepare yogurt dip

If using yogurt, stir the plain yogurt in a small bowl until smooth. Optionally stir in the honey (1 tsp) to sweeten lightly. Transfer to a small ramekin for dipping.

  2. 6

    Prepare nut butter dip

If using nut butter, warm the peanut or almond butter for 5–8 seconds in the microwave to loosen (optional). Transfer to a small bowl for dipping. If you like a thinner consistency, stir in up to 1 tsp warm water or lemon juice until desired consistency is reached.

  3. 7

    Prevent browning (optional)

If you plan to pre-slice apples or pears, toss slices immediately with 1 tsp lemon juice to slow oxidation. Do this in a bowl large enough to coat slices evenly.

  4. 8

Serve: place dips beside the whole fruit. Provide a small knife for guests who wish to slice fruit themselves and individual plates or napkins. For a single-serving healthy snack, combine 1 apple or 1 banana with 1/2 cup grapes and 1–2 tbs of a dip.
