Espresso
Americano assembly
Method
Espresso
- 1
Prepare beans and machine
Weigh 18 g of freshly roasted espresso beans. Grind to a fine, consistent espresso grind immediately before brewing. Ensure the espresso machine is warmed up and the portafilter is clean and dry.
- 2
Dose, tamp and brew
Dose the 18 g of ground coffee into a basket sized for a double shot. Level and tamp evenly with firm, consistent pressure. Lock the portafilter into the machine and start extraction. Brew approximately 30 ml of espresso (a concentrated double shot) into a small vessel or directly into the serving cup if preferred. Aim for an extraction time of 25–30 seconds.
Americano assembly
- 3
Preheat and add hot water
Preheat the large serving cup or mug by rinsing with hot water, then discard the rinse. Pour 240 ml of hot water (90–96°C / 194–205°F) into the preheated cup. For a hotter drink, pour the water first; for a more crema-forward Americano, pour the espresso over the water (see note).
- 4
Combine espresso and hot water
Pour the freshly brewed 30 ml espresso into the cup containing the 240 ml hot water (or pour the water over the espresso if you prefer). Stir gently once to homogenize. This yields a large Americano with a ratio close to 1:8 espresso to water for a smooth, full-sized cup.
