Method
Equipment & prep
- 1
Preheat a medium (10–12 oz / 300–350 ml) ceramic or glass cup by rinsing it with hot water. This keeps the beverage temperature stable.
- 2
Fill the espresso machine's reservoir with fresh filtered water and bring to proper brewing temperature. If using a kettle for hot water, heat water to 88–94°C (190–201°F).
Pulling the espresso
- 3
Dose & tamp
Weigh and dose 18 g of freshly ground espresso coffee into the portafilter. Distribute evenly and tamp with consistent pressure to create a level puck.
- 4
Brew
Lock the portafilter into the group head and start the extraction. Aim for an extraction volume of about 60 ml in 25–30 seconds (yield ~60 ml). Adjust grind size and dose if timing is significantly off.
- 5
If you prefer a slightly stronger or weaker Americano, you can adjust the espresso to hot water ratio in subsequent brews.
Assembling the Americano
- 6
Pour the brewed espresso into the preheated medium cup.
- 7
Add 150 ml of hot water to the espresso. For a classic Americano, pour the hot water into the cup, then add espresso (or vice versa) depending on preferred crema preservation. For this medium size, adding hot water to espresso yields a balanced cup.
- 8
Stir gently once with a spoon to combine.
- 9
- 10
Serve immediately.
