Whiskey Production Steps
- 1
Mashing
Combine the malted barley, corn, and rye in a large mash tun. Add 4 liters of hot water and stir well, allowing the grains to soak for about 1 hour at 65°C (149°F). This process converts the starches into fermentable sugars.
- 2
Cooling
After mashing, cool the mash to room temperature (around 20-25°C or 68-77°F). You can use a heat exchanger or simply transfer the mash to a fermentation vessel.
- 3
Fermentation
Add the yeast to the cooled mash and stir gently. Cover the fermentation vessel with an airlock and let it ferment for about 5-7 days, or until bubbling stops. The fermentation process converts the sugars into alcohol.
- 4
Distillation
Transfer the fermented mash to a still. Heat the still to separate the alcohol from the mash. Collect the distillate, which is the raw whiskey, and keep it for aging.
- 5
Aging
Store the distilled whiskey in oak barrels for a minimum of 3 years. The aging process allows the whiskey to develop its flavors and colors.
