Finishing & Garnish
Method
Coffee Base
- 1
Brew coffee
Brew 2 cups of very strong coffee (use espresso, AeroPress concentrate, or double-strength drip). If you prefer a slightly less intense drink, set aside 1/2 cup hot water to dilute after brewing.
- 2
Allow coffee to rest for 3–5 minutes so it cools slightly; if making coffee ice cubes, pour 1/2 cup of the brewed coffee into an ice tray and freeze at least 4 hours or overnight.
Oat Milk Blend
- 3
Soak oats (optional for silkier texture)
If time allows, combine the 2 tablespoons rolled oats with 1/4 cup of the oat milk and let sit 5–10 minutes to soften. This yields a smoother blended oat result; you can skip soaking for quicker prep.
- 4
Blend oat milk
In a blender combine soaked oats (or dry oats), remaining oat milk (¾ cup), 1 teaspoon maple syrup, 1 teaspoon neutral oil, 1/8 tsp fine salt, and 1/4 tsp vanilla extract. Blend on high 20–30 seconds until homogeneous and slightly frothy. The oil helps mimic dairy mouthfeel and creates a richer foam.
- 5
Strain (optional)
For an ultra-smooth texture, strain the blended oat milk through a fine mesh sieve or nut milk bag into a container, pressing to extract creamy liquid. You should end up with ~1 cup of oat milk blend.
- 6
Chill the oat blend briefly in the refrigerator or add a few coffee ice cubes to cool it down if the coffee base is still warm.
Clod (Chilled Ice & Texture)
- 7
Prepare glass
Fill a tall glass with large ice cubes (about 1 cup). If using coffee ice cubes, replace some regular cubes with them to avoid dilution.
- 8
Pour the chilled/tempered coffee over the ice, filling the glass about two-thirds full (roughly 1 to 1 1/4 cups of coffee). If brewed coffee is very strong, add up to 1/2 cup hot water before chilling to reach desired strength.
Assembly & Finish
- 9
Combine oat blend and coffee
Slowly pour the prepared oat milk blend over the back of a spoon onto the coffee to create a layered appearance, or pour directly and stir for a unified drink. The oat blend will create a silky mouthfeel and light foam on top.
- 10
Garnish
Lightly dust the top with a pinch of cocoa powder and a small pinch of ground cinnamon if desired. Taste and add extra maple syrup if more sweetness is desired (start with 1/2 tsp).
- 11
Serve immediately with a straw or spoon. If you want a warm variation, heat the oat blend and combine with hot coffee instead of using ice.
