Combine Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine heavy cream, whole milk, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. If making chocolate ice cream, add cocoa powder at this stage.

Mix Until Smooth
Whisk the mixture until the sugar and cocoa powder (if used) are fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.

Chill the Mixture
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.

Churn the Ice Cream
Pour the chilled mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.

Freeze the Ice Cream
Transfer the churned ice cream into an airtight container and freeze for at least 4 hours until firm.
Serving

Scoop and Serve
Scoop the ice cream into bowls or cones and top with a maraschino cherry before serving.
