Method
Make the Meatballs
- 1
Prepare meatball mixture
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, minced garlic, egg, milk, parsley, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—avoid overmixing to keep meatballs tender.
- 2
Shape and cook meatballs
Shape the mixture into 1 to 1.5 inch meatballs. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat, then add meatballs in batches. Brown on all sides, about 5–7 minutes total. Remove and set aside on a plate lined with paper towels.
Prepare the Tomato Sauce
- 3
Sauté aromatics
In the same skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add chopped onion and cook until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 more minute.
- 4
Simmer the sauce
Add crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, salt, pepper, and sugar. Stir to combine. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes.
- 5
Add meatballs
Return browned meatballs to the skillet with the sauce. Cover and simmer for an additional 15–20 minutes, or until meatballs are cooked through and sauce is thickened.
Cook the Pasta
- 6
Boil pasta
In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add 1 tablespoon salt, then add spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, about 8–10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Assemble and Serve
- 7
Divide cooked spaghetti among serving plates. Spoon sauce and meatballs over each portion.
- 8
Garnish with grated Parmesan and chopped parsley. Serve hot.
