Filling and Topping

Method

Dough

  1. 1

    Activate the Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

    Mix the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the activated yeast mixture and olive oil. Stir until a shaggy dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead the Dough

Transfer dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

    Let the Dough Rise

Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

Filling and Assembly

  1. 5

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. 6

    Divide and Roll

Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 2 equal portions. On a floured surface, roll each portion into an 8-inch circle.

  3. 7

    Fill with Nutella

Spread 3–4 tablespoons of Nutella onto one half of each dough circle, leaving a 1-inch border around the edge.

  4. 8

    Seal the Calzone

Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together and crimp with a fork to seal tightly.

  5. 9

    Apply Egg Wash

In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1 tablespoon of water. Brush the top of each calzone with the egg wash for a golden finish.

  6. 10

    Bake

Place calzones on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through.

Topping and Serving

  1. 11

    Dust with Powdered Sugar

Remove calzones from the oven and let them cool slightly. Dust generously with powdered sugar over the top.

  2. 12

    Serve with Gelato

Plate each Nutella calzone and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato on the side.
