Smash Base

Method

Smash Base

  1. 1

    Muddle

Place the fresh watermelon cubes and 4 basil leaves into a sturdy mixing glass or cocktail shaker. Add the lime juice. Gently muddle until the watermelon is broken down and the basil releases its oils but is not pulverized (about 8–10 light presses).

  2. 2

    Combine spirits

Add Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain and sour mix to the shaker with the muddled watermelon and basil.

Mixing & Chill

  1. 3

Fill the shaker with ice, cap it, and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until the exterior of the shaker is cold. This chills and slightly dilutes the mixture, integrating the watermelon and basil flavors.

  2. 4

If you prefer a clearer drink, double-strain the contents through a fine mesh strainer into a rocks glass half-filled with crushed ice to remove pulp and basil bits. For a more rustic presentation, strain once into the glass, leaving some small pieces of watermelon and basil.

Finish & Garnish

  1. 5

Top with 1 oz club soda if you want a slightly lighter, effervescent finish. Gently stir once to combine (one gentle lift and fold).

  2. 6

Garnish with the reserved basil sprig and a watermelon wedge or cube on the rim or skewered. Optionally slap the basil sprig between your palms before garnishing to release aromatics.

  3. 7

Serve immediately with a short straw and enjoy.
