Preparation
Flavor base
Add 1 1/2 tablespoons of your chosen flavored syrup into the glass over the ice. If you prefer a sweeter drink, also add 1 teaspoon simple syrup. If using fresh fruit, muddle 2 teaspoons of chopped fruit with the syrup gently in the bottom of the glass to release juices before adding ice.
Assembling the Soda
Slowly pour 8 oz chilled club soda (or chilled flavored/vanilla sparkling water if using) into the glass over the back of a spoon or down the side to preserve carbonation and limit mixing. Pour about three-quarters first, then give a gentle stir (1–2 turns) with a long spoon to combine syrup and soda without flattening it.
If you want a creamy Italian soda, gently pour 2 tablespoons of half-and-half or heavy cream over the back of a spoon so it floats on top and creates a layered look. Stir lightly to integrate if you prefer a uniform color and texture.
Finishing & Garnish
Top with 2 tablespoons whipped cream if desired. Garnish with a lemon or lime wedge, a few fresh berries, or a mint sprig. If serving as an adult cocktail, add 1 oz vodka or light rum and stir once gently to combine.
Serve immediately with a straw and a long spoon so the drinker can stir to re-incorporate syrup and cream as they drink. Taste and adjust: add more syrup (1/2 tbsp increments) for more sweetness or a splash more cream for more richness.
