Burger Patty

Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mash the Beans

In a large mixing bowl, mash the black beans using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.

  2. 2

    Add Vegetables

Stir in the rolled oats, grated carrot, chopped bell pepper, chopped onion, minced garlic, ground cumin, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.

  3. 3

    Prepare Flax Egg

In a small bowl, combine the flaxseed meal and water. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it thickens.

  4. 4

    Combine Mixture

Add the flax egg to the bean and vegetable mixture, and stir until everything is evenly mixed.

  5. 5

    Form Patties

Divide the mixture into 4 equal parts and shape each part into a burger patty.

  6. 6

    Chill the Patties

Place the patties on a plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to firm up.

Cook the Patties

  1. 7

    Heat the Pan

In a skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium heat.

  2. 8

    Cook the Patties

Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the skillet. Cook for about 5-6 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.

  3. 9

    Prepare the Buns

While the patties are cooking, toast the whole grain burger buns until lightly golden.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 10

    Layer the Toppings

On the bottom half of each toasted bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by a cooked patty, tomato slice, and avocado slice.

  2. 11

    Add Condiments

Top with ketchup and mustard as desired, then place the top half of the bun on each burger.

  3. 12

    Serve

Serve the veggie burgers warm with your favorite side dish.
