SWEET FRY BREAD

Method

SWEET FRY BREAD

  1. 1

    Whisk Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: all-purpose flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar until evenly distributed.

  2. 2

    Hydrate Dough

Make a well in the center and gradually add warm water. Stir with a wooden spoon or spatula until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms. You may need a bit more or less water to reach a smooth, pliable dough.

  3. 3

    Knead and Rest

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 1-2 minutes until smooth. Cover and let rest for 15 minutes to relax the gluten.

  4. 4

    Shape Fry Bread

Roll the rested dough to about 1/4 inch (6 mm) thickness. Cut into rounds, triangles, or squares using a pastry cutter or knife.

  5. 5

    Heat Oil

Pour vegetable oil into a deep skillet or pot to a depth of about 2 inches (5 cm). Heat to 350-375°F (175-190°C).

  6. 6

    Fry

Fry the dough pieces in batches, cooking 1-2 minutes per side until they puff and turn golden brown. Use tongs to flip and remove to drain on paper towels.

  7. 7

    Dust

While the fry breads are still warm, dust generously with powdered sugar. Serve immediately with extra powdered sugar on the side if desired.
