Method

FRY BREAD TACOS: Prepare Fry Bread

  1. 1

In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. 2

Stir in warm water gradually until a soft dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead briefly on a floured surface until smooth, about 2 minutes.

  4. 4

Divide dough into 6 equal portions and roll each into a ball.

  5. 5

Roll out each ball into a round about 6-7 inches in diameter.

  6. 6

Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or heavy pot to 350–375°F (175–190°C). The oil should be about 1 inch deep.

  7. 7

Fry dough rounds one at a time until golden and puffed, about 1–2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.

FRY BREAD TACOS: Cook Beef Filling

  1. 8

In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spatula, until browned and no pink remains, about 6–8 minutes.

  2. 9

Drain excess fat from the skillet.

  3. 10

Stir in chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.

  4. 11

Pour in water and simmer for 3–5 minutes until the mixture is lightly thickened.

FRY BREAD TACOS: Assemble and Serve

  1. 12

Place a warm fry bread on a plate.

  2. 13

Top with a portion of the beef filling.

  3. 14

Sprinkle with shredded cheese and lettuce.

  4. 15

Add diced tomatoes and a dollop of sour cream and salsa, if desired.
