- 1
Prepare toppings: wash and dry lettuce; shred lettuce if needed and set aside. Dice the tomato. Measure out 1 cup shredded cheese and 0.25 cup salsa; place sour cream nearby for optional topping.
- 2
Warm refried beans in a small saucepan over medium-low heat until heated through, stirring occasionally. Stir in 0.25 tsp salt and 0.125 tsp black pepper; taste and adjust salt if needed.
- 3
If using extra-crisp tostadas, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Arrange the tostadas on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake 2–3 minutes to warm; remove and set aside.
- 4
Assemble each tostada by spreading a thin layer of warm refried beans over the surface of each tostada.
- 5
Scatter an even layer of shredded cheese over the beans on each tostada; return to the oven for 1–2 minutes to melt the cheese.
- 6
Top with shredded lettuce and diced tomato.
- 7
Add salsa over the toppings; if desired, top with a dollop of sour cream.
- 8
Serve immediately, with lime wedges or cilantro on the side if desired.
