Method
Preparation
- 1
Rinse the Cranberries
Rinse the fresh cranberries under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Discard any that are soft or damaged.
- 2
Combine Ingredients
In a large saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, granulated sugar, water, orange juice, orange zest, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and salt. Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
Cooking
- 3
Cook the Mixture
Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to medium-low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
- 4
Add Optional Ingredients
If desired, stir in the chopped walnuts, dried raisins, and ground ginger during the last 5 minutes of cooking for added flavor and texture.
Cooling and Serving
- 5
Cool the Sauce
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the cranberry sauce cool to room temperature. It will continue to thicken as it cools.
- 6
Serve
Transfer the cooled cranberry sauce to a serving dish or container. It can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Enjoy as a side dish or condiment!
