Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring 4 quarts of water to a boil. Add a tablespoon of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Once the water is boiling, add the pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

When the pasta is cooked, reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain the pasta in a colander.

Making the Sauce

  1. 4

    Sauté Garlic

In the same pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  2. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Chop the tomatoes and add them to the pot. Cook for 5-7 minutes until they soften and release their juices.

  3. 6

    Season the Sauce

Stir in salt, black pepper, and optional red pepper flakes. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.

  4. 7

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained pasta to the sauce and toss to combine. If the sauce is too thick, add reserved pasta water a little at a time until desired consistency is reached.

  5. 8

    Add Fresh Basil

Remove from heat and stir in fresh basil and lemon juice (if using) before serving.

Serving

  1. 9

    Plate the Dish

Serve the pasta in bowls and top with grated Parmesan cheese.

  2. 10

    Garnish

Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
