Method
Prepare the Dough
- 1
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix well.
- 2
Add Butter
Cut the butter into small pieces and add it to the flour mixture. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 3
Add Wet Ingredients
Stir in the milk and water gradually until the dough comes together. Knead gently on a floured surface until smooth.
- 4
Rest the Dough
Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
Prepare the Filling
- 5
Mix Filling Ingredients
In a medium bowl, combine the fruit filling, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Mix until well combined.
Assemble and Fry the Pies
- 6
Roll out the Dough
On a floured surface, roll out the rested dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut out circles using a biscuit cutter or a glass.
- 7
Fill the Dough Circles
Place a tablespoon of the filling in the center of each dough circle. Be careful not to overfill.
- 8
Seal the Pies
Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges together and crimp with a fork to seal.
- 9
Heat the Oil
In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).
- 10
Fry the Pies
Carefully add the pies to the hot oil, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- 11
Drain and Cool
Remove the fried pies from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Allow to cool slightly before serving.
