Method
Preparation
- 1
Prepare the Pork
Trim any excess fat from the pork shoulder. Cut it into larger chunks if necessary to fit in your slow cooker.
- 2
Mix the Dry Rub
In a bowl, combine brown sugar, paprika, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Mix well to create an even rub.
- 3
Rub the Pork
Generously rub the spice mixture all over the pork shoulder, ensuring it's well-coated.
Cooking
- 4
Set Up the Slow Cooker
Place the seasoned pork shoulder into the slow cooker.
- 5
Add Liquid Ingredients
Pour the apple cider vinegar and chicken broth over the pork in the slow cooker.
- 6
Cook the Pork
Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-6 hours, until the pork is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
Finishing
- 7
Shred the Pork
Once cooked, remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board. Use two forks to shred the pork into bite-sized pieces.
- 8
Mix with Barbecue Sauce
Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and mix in the barbecue sauce. Stir well to coat.
- 9
Serve
Serve the pulled pork on buns with coleslaw on top, if desired.
