Tofu Preparation

Coating and Frying

Method

Tofu Preparation

  1. 1

    Press the Tofu

Remove the tofu from its packaging and wrap it in a clean kitchen towel. Place a heavy object on top (like a cast iron skillet) and let it sit for at least 30 minutes to press out excess moisture.

  2. 2

    Marinate the Tofu

Once pressed, cut the tofu into 1-inch cubes. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, rice vinegar, maple syrup, garlic powder, and smoked paprika. Add the tofu cubes to the marinade and toss gently to coat. Let it marinate for 15-20 minutes.

Coating and Frying

  1. 3

    Prepare the Coating

In a shallow dish, combine cornstarch, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to combine.

  2. 4

    Coat the Tofu

Using a slotted spoon, remove the tofu cubes from the marinade and allow excess liquid to drip off. Dredge the tofu cubes in the cornstarch mixture, ensuring they are well coated. Shake off any excess cornstarch.

  3. 5

    Fry the Tofu

In a large skillet, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the coated tofu cubes in a single layer. Fry for about 5-7 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Work in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding the pan.

  4. 6

    Drain and Serve

Once fried, transfer the tofu to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot, and enjoy your crispy smoked tofu!
