Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil over high heat. Once boiling, add a generous amount of salt.

  2. 2

    Cook Penne Pasta

Add the penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to the package instructions until al dente, usually about 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once the pasta is cooked, reserve about 1 cup of the pasta water, then drain the pasta in a colander. Set aside.

Making the Sauce

  1. 4

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the extra virgin olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

  3. 6

    Add Red Pepper Flakes

Stir in the red pepper flakes and cook for another 30 seconds to infuse the oil.

  4. 7

    Add Tomatoes

Pour in the canned chopped tomatoes, stir well, and bring the mixture to a simmer. Let it cook for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  5. 8

    Season the Sauce

Season the sauce with salt to taste and adjust the heat level by adding more red pepper flakes if desired.

  6. 9

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained penne pasta to the sauce and toss to coat. If the sauce is too thick, add some reserved pasta water to reach the desired consistency.

  7. 10

    Garnish with Basil

Remove from heat and stir in the chopped fresh basil before serving.
