Calamari

Spicy Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Start by cleaning the calamari and slicing them into rings if not pre-sliced. Pat them dry with paper towels.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a shallow bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well.

  3. 3

    Prepare Egg Wash

In another bowl, beat the eggs until well combined.

Frying the Calamari

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).

  2. 5

    Coat the Calamari

Dip the calamari rings into the egg wash, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge them in the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.

  3. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the coated calamari to the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 2-3 minutes until golden brown.

  4. 7

    Drain and Keep Warm

Once golden, remove the calamari from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil. Keep warm in a low oven while you fry the remaining batches.

Making the Spicy Marinara Sauce

  1. 8

    Heat Olive Oil

In a saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

  2. 9

    Sauté Garlic

Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.

  3. 10

    Add Tomatoes and Spices

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.

  4. 11

    Simmer the Sauce

Let the sauce simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add fresh basil just before serving.

Serving

  1. 12

    Plate and Serve

Serve the fried calamari hot with the spicy marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
