Checkerboard Cake Components

Method

Cake Preparation and Assembly

  1. 1

    Prepare the Cake Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well until combined.

  2. 2

In another bowl, cream the softened butter until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

  3. 3

Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with milk. Mix until just combined and smooth.

  4. 4

    Bake the Cake Layers

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  5. 5

Divide the batter evenly into two bowls. Color one bowl with black food coloring and leave the other plain (white).

  6. 6

Pour alternating spoonfuls of the black and white batter into the center of the pans to create a checkerboard pattern.

  7. 7

Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

  8. 8

    Prepare the Frosting

In a large bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form. Gradually add powdered sugar and continue to whip until stiff peaks form.

  9. 9

Fold in melted dark chocolate until fully incorporated.

  10. 10

    Assemble the Cake

Once the cakes are completely cool, level the tops if necessary. Place one layer on a serving platter.

  11. 11

Spread a layer of chocolate frosting on top of the first layer, then carefully place the second layer on top.

  12. 12

Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining chocolate frosting. Decorate with additional food coloring or chocolate shavings as desired.

  13. 13

    Serve

Slice the cake into squares to showcase the checkerboard pattern and serve. Enjoy your Checkerboard Kings Row!
