Pasta

Bolognese Sauce

Method

Cooking the Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

Fill a large pot with water and add 1 tablespoon of salt. Bring the water to a vigorous boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Spaghetti

Once the water is boiling, add the spaghetti. Cook according to package instructions, typically about 8-10 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

  3. 3

    Drain and Set Aside

After cooking, drain the spaghetti in a colander and set aside. Reserve a small cup of pasta water if needed later for the sauce.

Making the Bolognese Sauce

  1. 4

    Prepare Vegetables

Finely chop the onion, carrot, celery, and garlic.

  2. 5

    Heat Olive Oil

In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.

  3. 6

    Sauté Vegetables

Add the chopped onion, carrot, celery, and garlic to the skillet. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until softened and fragrant.

  4. 7

    Brown the Meat

Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef to the skillet. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon, about 5-7 minutes.

  5. 8

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the canned tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and black pepper. Mix well.

  6. 9

    Pour in Red Wine

Add the red wine to the skillet. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken and flavors to meld, stirring occasionally.

  7. 10

    Finish the Sauce

Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. If the sauce is too thick, you can add a little reserved pasta water to loosen it up.

Serving

  1. 11

    Combine and Serve

Serve the spaghetti topped with the Bolognese sauce. Grate Parmesan cheese over the top to finish. Enjoy your meal!
