Method

Orange Syrup Base

  1. 1

    Prepare juice and zest

Roll 2 large oranges firmly on the counter to loosen juices. Zest one orange finely until you have about 1 tablespoon of zest. Halve the oranges and juice them, then strain the juice through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove pulp and seeds. Measure 2 cups of strained orange juice.

  2. 2

    Make simple orange syrup

Combine 1 cup granulated sugar and 1 cup water in a medium saucepan. Add the 1 tablespoon fresh orange zest. Warm over medium heat, stirring until sugar fully dissolves. Bring to a gentle simmer for 2 minutes to extract oils from zest. Remove from heat.

  3. 3

Let the syrup steep with the zest for 10 minutes to further infuse orange flavor, then strain out and discard the zest using a fine-mesh sieve.

  4. 4

Stir the 2 cups strained orange juice and 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice into the warm syrup. Allow the mixture to cool to lukewarm (about 20–25 minutes).

Concentrated Flavor Enhancers

  1. 5

Once the syrup-julce mixture is lukewarm, whisk in 1/2 teaspoon natural orange oil (or cold-pressed orange extract). Start with 1/2 teaspoon — orange oil is potent. If using a citrus blend extract, add an additional 1/4 teaspoon for complexity. Mix thoroughly and taste a small sample diluted in 3 parts water to 1 part syrup to check intensity.

  2. 6

Add 1/2 teaspoon citric acid to brighten the flavor and help with preservation. Stir until fully dissolved. Taste again (diluted) and, if desired, adjust: add up to an extra 1/8–1/4 teaspoon orange oil for more aroma or 1/8 teaspoon citric acid for more tang, but adjust cautiously.

Stabilizers & Final Adjustments

  1. 7

If you plan to store the flavoring for more than a few days, add 1/4 teaspoon sodium benzoate solution or an equivalent amount of potassium sorbate and mix thoroughly. This is optional for short-term use but recommended for shelf stability.

  2. 8

Measure the combined mixture and add filtered water to bring the total volume to approximately 591 ml (20 fl oz). If the concentrate is slightly over or under, adjust so the final product is 591 ml. Stir or gently shake in a sanitized bottle to combine.

  3. 9

Transfer the finished Orange Natural Flavor into a clean, airtight amber bottle or other sealed container. Store refrigerated for up to 2–3 weeks without preservatives or up to 3 months with added preservatives. Shake gently before each use, as natural oils may separate slightly.

  4. 10

Usage: Use this as a natural orange flavoring for beverages, syrups, or culinary applications. A suggested starting ratio is 1 part flavor concentrate to 4–8 parts water or drink base, adjusting to taste.
