Method

For Frying

  1. 1

    Prepare the Pickles

Start by draining the dill pickle slices on paper towels to remove excess moisture. This will help them fry better and achieve a crispy texture.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a large bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.

  3. 3

    Add Buttermilk

Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry mixture, stirring until a smooth batter forms. The batter should be thick enough to coat the pickles.

  4. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or fryer, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test if the oil is ready by dropping a small amount of batter into it; if it sizzles, it’s ready.

  5. 5

    Coat the Pickles

Dip each pickle slice into the batter, ensuring it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off before frying.

  6. 6

    Fry the Pickles

Carefully place the battered pickles into the hot oil in batches, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.

  7. 7

    Drain and Serve

Use a slotted spoon to remove the fried pickles from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve hot with hot sauce on the side for dipping.
