Method

Preparation of Ingredients

  1. 1

    Slice the Onions

Peel the onions and cut them into 1/4 inch thick rings. Separate the rings and set them aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Batter

In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Mix well. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and milk. Gradually stir the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until you have a smooth batter.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Coating

Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow dish for coating the onion rings.

Frying the Onion Rings

  1. 4

    Heat the Oil

In a large, deep skillet or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C). You can test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter into it; it should sizzle and float to the top.

  2. 5

    Coat the Onion Rings

Dip each onion ring into the batter, making sure it is fully coated. Allow any excess batter to drip off, then coat the battered ring with breadcrumbs.

  3. 6

    Fry the Onion Rings

Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil, being careful not to overcrowd the pan. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes. Use a slotted spoon to turn them occasionally for even cooking.

  4. 7

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove the onion rings from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauce.
