Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat. Add a pinch of salt to the water.

  2. 2

    Cook Macaroni

Once the water is boiling, add the elbow macaroni. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Stir occasionally.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the macaroni, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, whisk in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes to form a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Slowly pour in the milk while continuously whisking to prevent lumps. Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese

Remove the pot from heat and gradually stir in the sharp cheddar cheese until fully melted and smooth.

  5. 8

    Season

Add salt, black pepper, and paprika. Stir well to combine.

Combining & Serving

  1. 9

    Combine Pasta and Cheese Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the macaroni is well coated.

  2. 10

    Prepare Topping (optional)

If desired, mix breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese in a bowl.

  3. 11

    Serve or Bake

You can serve the mac & cheese immediately or transfer it to a baking dish, sprinkle with the breadcrumb mixture, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.
