Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cream Butter and Sugar

In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy. Gradually add the granulated sugar and continue to beat until the mixture is light and fluffy.

  4. 4

    Add Eggs and Vanilla

Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Then mix in the vanilla extract.

  5. 5

    Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures

Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Start and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.

  6. 6

    Add Optional Ingredients

If using, fold in chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or fruit puree to the batter until evenly distributed.

Baking

  1. 7

    Pour Batter into Pans

Divide the batter evenly between the two prepared cake pans.

  2. 8

    Bake the Cakes

Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.

  3. 9

    Cool the Cakes

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Frosting (optional)

  1. 10

    Prepare Frosting

You can frost the cakes with your favorite icing or frosting once they are completely cooled.
