Method
Meatballs
- 1
Prepare the Meatball Mixture
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, Italian breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt, and black pepper. Mix until all ingredients are well combined.
- 2
Form the Meatballs
Using your hands, form the mixture into meatballs about 1 inch in diameter. Place the formed meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 3
Bake the Meatballs
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Bake the meatballs for 20-25 minutes or until they are cooked through and browned.
Sausage
- 4
Prepare the Sausage
If using Mailhot's Italian sausage, remove the casing. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned and cooked through, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Set aside.
Pasta and Sauce
- 5
Cook the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
- 6
Heat the Marinara Sauce
In a large saucepan, heat the marinara sauce over medium heat. Add the cooked meatballs and sausage to the sauce, allowing them to simmer for about 5-10 minutes.
- 7
Combine and Serve
Add the cooked penne pasta to the sauce, tossing to coat the pasta evenly. Drizzle with olive oil and garnish with fresh basil. Serve hot.
