1

Build and stir

Place a mixing glass on a wet towel or non-slip surface. Add 2 oz Maker's 46, 0.75 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz Cherry Heering, 0.25 oz orange curaçao, 0.25 oz simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash chocolate bitters (if using) into the mixing glass.

2

Add ice

Fill the mixing glass with large ice cubes until nearly full. The large cubes chill effectively while minimizing dilution.

3

Stir to chill and dilute

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture smoothly and steadily for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns) until the outside of the mixing glass feels cold and slightly frosted. This achieves proper dilution (roughly 20–25% increase in volume).

4

Prepare glass

Place a large ice cube or two in a chilled Old Fashioned or rocks glass. If you prefer the drink very cold, chill the glass beforehand in the freezer for 5–10 minutes.

5

Strain and garnish

Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the ice. Express the orange peel by holding it over the drink with the outside of the peel facing down and give it a good twist to release oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Add the Luxardo cherry on a pick if desired.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Sip and enjoy the rich vanilla and baking-spice notes of Maker's 46 balanced by sweet vermouth, cherry, and orange accents.
