Method
Tequila & Spirits
Measure spirits
Chill an old-fashioned/rocks glass briefly by filling with ice and set aside. In a mixing glass, pour 3 oz extra añejo tequila and 0.5 oz reposado tequila. The extra añejo is the star: choose a rich, oak-forward bottle for depth; the reposado adds brightness and balance.
Liqueur & Sweetener
Add 0.5 oz orange liqueur and 0.25 oz agave syrup to the mixing glass with the tequilas. The orange liqueur brings citrusy sweetness and the small amount of agave ties flavors together without over-sweetening.
Citrus & Bitters
Add 0.5 oz fresh lime juice and 2 dashes Angostura bitters. Lime brightens the rich tequilas and bitters add aromatic spice and complexity. Fill the mixing glass with plenty of ice.
Mixing
Stir to chill and dilute
Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted. Aim for a silky texture and proper balance — extra añejo benefits from gentle stirring rather than shaking to preserve silky mouthfeel.
Serve & Garnish
Discard the ice from the chilled old-fashioned glass and place a single large ice cube in it. Strain the mixed cocktail over the large ice cube.
Flame orange peel
Express oils from one orange peel over the drink: hold the peel skin-side down about 3–4 inches above the cocktail, use a lit match or small lighter to briefly flame the oils as you squeeze the peel so a fine spray of oils passes through the flame and onto the surface. Rub the rim with the peel and rest the peel on the ice. Optionally add a cocktail cherry on a pick.
Serve immediately. The finished drink is rich, smooth, slightly sweet with orange-citrus lift and gentle spice from bitters — a contemplative sipper.
