Cooking Pasta

Boil the Pasta
In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add 2 cups of elbow macaroni and cook according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Making Cheese Sauce

Prepare the Roux
In the same pot used for the pasta, melt 4 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Once melted, whisk in 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour and cook for about 1-2 minutes until lightly golden.

Add Milk
Slowly whisk in 2 cups of milk, stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

Combining Ingredients

Mix Pasta and Cheese Sauce
Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is evenly coated.
Optional Topping

Prepare Topping
If using, mix 1 cup of breadcrumbs with 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan cheese and 1 teaspoon of paprika in a small bowl.

Top the Mac & Cheese
Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the mac and cheese in the pot or transfer to a baking dish and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 20 minutes until golden brown.
