  1. 1

Prepare potatoes: Peel if desired and cut into even chunks; place in a pot and cover with salted water.

  2. 2

Bring the potatoes to a boil and cook until tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain and set aside warm.

  3. 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine ground beef, onion, garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, 2 tablespoons milk, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix gently until just combined; avoid overmixing.

  4. 4

Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape into patties about 3/4 inch thick.

  5. 5

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a small amount of oil. Sear the patties 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside.

  6. 6

    Make the gravy roux

In the same skillet, melt butter and whisk in flour to form a light roux; cook about 1 minute, stirring constantly.

  7. 7

Slowly whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the pan. Bring to a gentle simmer and cook 3-5 minutes until the gravy thickens.

  8. 8

Return the patties to the skillet, nestling them in the gravy. Simmer 8-10 minutes, turning once, until the patties are cooked through and flavorful.

  9. 9

Finish the mashed potatoes by mashing with butter, 120 ml milk, salt, and pepper until creamy and smooth.

  10. 10

Trim the green beans and toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper. Steam or sauté 6-8 minutes until crisp-tender.

  11. 11

Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning if needed. If thicker gravy is desired, whisk in a little more flour (dissolved in water) and cook 1-2 minutes more.

  12. 12

To serve, spoon mashed potatoes onto plates, place a hamburger steak on top, ladle gravy over, and add green beans on the side. Garnish with parsley if desired.
