Frozen Margarita
Method
Frozen Margarita
- 1
Prepare glasses
Place coarse salt on a small flat plate. Run a lime wedge around the rim of each chilled margarita or rocks glass to moisten. Dip the rim into the salt, twisting to coat evenly. Set glasses aside on a tray in the freezer or refrigerator to keep cold while you blend.
- 2
Juice limes
Roll the limes on the counter firmly to loosen juices, then cut and juice until you have about 3 fl oz of fresh lime juice (about 3 medium limes). Strain if you prefer no pulp.
- 3
Make simple syrup (if using)
If you don't have pre-made simple syrup or agave, combine equal parts sugar and hot water (for this recipe about 1 fl oz sugar + 1 fl oz hot water), stir until sugar fully dissolves, cool before using. Alternatively use 1 fl oz agave nectar directly.
- 4
Combine in blender
Add 6 fl oz tequila, 2 fl oz triple sec (or Cointreau), 3 fl oz fresh lime juice, 1 fl oz simple syrup (or 1 fl oz agave) and 4 cups of ice to a high-powered blender. Secure lid.
- 5
Blend to desired consistency
Start blending on low to break the ice, then increase to high and pulse until the mixture is smooth and slushy, about 20–40 seconds depending on blender strength. If too thick, add 1–2 tablespoons (about 0.5 fl oz) cold water or more tequila and pulse briefly. If too thin, add a handful more ice and re-blend.
- 6
Taste and adjust
Taste a small spoonful and adjust sweetness or acidity: add up to 0.5 fl oz more simple syrup for sweetness or up to 0.5 fl oz more lime juice for brightness. Blend briefly after adjustments.
- 7
Serve
Pour the frozen margarita into the prepared salt-rimmed glasses, dividing evenly. If desired, float 0.5 fl oz Cointreau on top of each drink (drizzle gently) for extra orange aroma. Garnish each glass with a lime wedge on the rim.
- 8
Storage and notes
Serve immediately for best texture. If the mixture sits too long and separates, re-blend briefly with a small amount of ice. For a virgin version, replace tequila and triple sec with additional lime juice and orange juice or a non-alcoholic orange syrup, and adjust sweetener to taste.
