Pasta

Cheese Sauce

Topping (optional)

Method

Cooking Pasta

  1. 1

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring water to a boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook Pasta

Add the elbow macaroni to the boiling water. Cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 7-8 minutes.

  3. 3

    Drain Pasta

Once cooked, drain the macaroni in a colander and set aside.

Making Cheese Sauce

  1. 4

    Melt Butter

In the same pot used for the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. 5

    Add Flour

Once the butter is melted, add the all-purpose flour and whisk continuously for about 1 minute to create a roux.

  3. 6

    Add Milk

Gradually pour in the milk while whisking to avoid lumps. Continue to cook until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes.

  4. 7

    Add Cheese and Seasonings

Remove the pot from heat, then stir in the shredded cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, and paprika until the cheese is fully melted and the sauce is smooth.

Combining

  1. 8

    Mix Pasta and Sauce

Add the drained macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir until the pasta is well coated.

Optional Topping

  1. 9

    Prepare Topping

If using, mix the bread crumbs and grated Parmesan cheese in a small bowl.

  2. 10

    Top and Bake

Transfer the mac and cheese to a baking dish, sprinkle the topping mixture on top, and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 15-20 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown.

Serving

  1. 11

    Serve

Remove from the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, then serve warm.
