Caramel
Custard
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a saucepan, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir gently over medium heat until the sugar dissolves.
- 2
Cook the Caramel
Increase the heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Without stirring, allow it to boil until it turns a deep amber color, about 10-15 minutes.
- 3
Cool the Caramel
Immediately pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting it to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool and harden.
Custard Preparation
- 4
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Blend the Custard Mixture
In a blender, combine 4 large eggs, 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, 1 tsp of vanilla extract, and 3 tbsp of granulated sugar. Blend until smooth.
- 6
Pour Custard into Caramelized Dish
Pour the custard mixture over the set caramel in the baking dish.
- 7
Prepare for Baking
Place the baking dish in a larger baking pan and fill the outer pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the flan dish.
- 8
Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 9
Cool and Refrigerate
Once cooked, remove the flan from the water bath and let it cool at room temperature. Then, refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight.
Serving
- 10
Unmold the Flan
To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan to loosen it, then invert it onto a serving plate. The caramel will flow over the top.
- 11
