Coffee and Water
Equipment (consumables counted as ingredients)
Method
Preparation
- 1
Measure and grind
Weigh or measure your coffee. Use 2 tablespoons (about 10–12 g) of whole beans per 12 fl oz (360 ml) of water. Grind beans to a medium consistency (similar to granulated sugar). If you already have preground coffee, skip the grinding step.
- 2
Prepare equipment
Place a paper filter in the brew basket or dripper. Rinse the paper filter with hot water to remove papery flavors and preheat the brewer and carafe. Discard rinse water from the carafe.
Brewing (automatic drip)
- 3
Fill and start
Add the 2 tablespoons of medium-ground coffee to the rinsed filter. Pour 12 fl oz (360 ml) of filtered water into the machine's reservoir. Start the drip cycle and allow the machine to brew until all water has passed through the grounds (typically 4–6 minutes depending on machine).
- 4
Post-brew
Once brewing stops, remove the carafe and discard the used grounds and filter. Give the coffee a gentle swirl in the carafe to blend the liquid for consistent flavor.
Brewing (pour-over alternative)
- 5
Bloom
If using a pour-over dripper, place medium-ground coffee (2 tbs) in the rinsed filter. Heat filtered water to 200°F (about 30 seconds off boil). Pour just enough water (about 30–40 ml) to saturate the grounds evenly and let bloom for 30–45 seconds to release gases.
- 6
Continue pouring
After the bloom, pour the remaining water slowly in a circular motion, avoiding pouring directly on the filter. Aim to finish pouring within 2:00–2:30 minutes; total brew time should be about 3–4 minutes. Allow all water to drain through before removing the dripper.
- 7
Finish
Discard the used grounds and filter, pour the brewed coffee into a cup, and swirl lightly to homogenize. Serve immediately.
