Arepa Dough

Method

Making the Arepa Dough

  1. 1

    Combine Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine the pre-cooked cornmeal and salt. Gradually add warm water while stirring with a wooden spoon or your hands until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Knead the dough for about 2-3 minutes until it is smooth and pliable. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, if too wet, add a bit more cornmeal.

  3. 3

    Shape the Arepas

Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape each portion into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disc about 1/2 inch thick.

Cooking the Arepas

  1. 4

    Heat the Pan

In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat until hot.

  2. 5

    Cook the Arepas

Place the flattened arepas in the skillet. Cook for about 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.

  3. 6

    Bake the Arepas (Optional)

For a softer interior, transfer the cooked arepas to a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 10 minutes.

Filling the Arepas

  1. 7

    Slice the Arepas

Once cooked, slice the arepas horizontally, leaving one side attached to create a pocket.

  2. 8

    Add Fillings

Fill each arepa with your choice of fillings, such as shredded cheese, black beans, avocado, shredded chicken, or sliced tomatoes.

  3. 9

    Serve

Serve the arepas warm, with additional toppings or sauces as desired.
