Method

Cake Base Preparation

  1. 1

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir until well combined.

  3. 3

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  4. 4

    Incorporate Boiling Water

Carefully stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth. Note that the batter will be thin.

  5. 5

    Bake the Cake

Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  6. 6

    Cool the Cake

Once baked, let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Chocolate Ganache Preparation

  1. 7

    Heat Cream

In a saucepan over medium heat, bring the heavy cream to a simmer. Do not let it boil.

  2. 8

    Melt Chocolate

Place the semi-sweet chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Pour the hot cream over the chocolate and let it sit for 5 minutes.

  3. 9

    Combine Ganache

Whisk the mixture until smooth. Add butter and stir until melted and combined.

Assemble and Decorate

  1. 10

    Layer the Cakes

Once the cakes are completely cool, place one layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache on top.

  2. 11

    Add Second Layer

Place the second cake layer on top of the ganache-covered first layer.

  3. 12

    Pour Ganache

Pour the remaining ganache over the top of the cake, allowing it to drip down the sides.

  4. 13

    Decorate

Sprinkle chocolate shavings on top and arrange fresh berries around the base of the cake.

  5. 14

    Serve

Cut into slices and serve to enjoy this decadent dessert!
