Bao Buns

Method

Bao Buns Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt.

  3. 3

    Combine Ingredients

After the yeast has activated, add the milk and melted butter to the yeast mixture. Stir well to combine. Gradually add this mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms.

  4. 4

    Knead the Dough

Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  5. 5

    Let Dough Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  6. 6

    Shape the Buns

Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and then flatten it into an oval shape.

  7. 7

    Steam the Buns

Place the shaped buns on parchment paper and steam them in a bamboo steamer or a pot with a steaming rack for about 10-12 minutes until fluffy.
