Danish Pastry Dough

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and yeast. In a small saucepan, heat the milk until warm (not boiling). Add the warm milk to the dry ingredients, followed by the melted butter, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until a dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Place in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-1.5 hours.

  3. 3

    Shape the Danish

After the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out into a large rectangle. Fold the dough into thirds like a letter, then roll it out again. Repeat this process 2-3 times to create layers.

  4. 4

    Fill and Bake

Cut the dough into squares and fill each with your desired filling (such as cream cheese, fruit, or almond paste). Fold the corners of each square toward the center and pinch to seal. Place on a baking sheet and let rise for another 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
