Method
Preparation
- 1
- 2
Fill the sink or basin with warm (not hot) water to a depth of about 3–4 inches (enough to submerge the bowls without covering the stems entirely). Add 2 tablespoons of mild dish soap and swirl to create a gentle sudsy solution.
Initial washing
- 3
- 4
- 5
Vinegar soak for spots and film
- 6
Remove hard water spots
If any coupe has spotting, remove it from the soapy water and place it in a separate basin or a shallow bowl containing a 1:4 solution of white vinegar to warm water (120 ml vinegar in about 480 ml water). Let the glass sit for 2–5 minutes — do not soak longer than 10 minutes to avoid any stress from temperature differences.
- 7
After soaking, gently wipe the affected areas with a microfiber cloth. Rinse immediately in the warm water basin to remove vinegar residue.
Rinsing
- 8
- 9
If you see bubbles or streaks, re-rinse. For trapped water in the stem area, tip the glass and gently shake to expel.
Sanitizing (optional)
- 10
Quick alcohol rinse
For extra sanitization or to remove oily fingerprints, lightly dampen a microfiber cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol and wipe the rim, bowl, stem, and foot. Do this in a well-ventilated area and allow the alcohol to evaporate fully before drying.
Drying and polishing
- 11
Hand-dry each coupe
Place each glass upside down on the cushioned towel briefly (no longer than a minute) to let excess water drip off. Then, using a clean microfiber cloth, hold the glass by the stem and gently dry the inside first by reaching into the bowl with the cloth, then dry the outside, rim, stem, and foot. Use a second dry cloth if needed to avoid streaks.
- 12
Final polish
Using a non-abrasive glass polish or a jeweler's cloth, buff each coupe in circular motions until crystal-clear and streak-free. Pay special attention to the rim and cut facets to enhance brilliance. If you have a compressed air canister, use a short burst to remove any lint from crevices before final polish.
Storage
- 13
- 14
If storing long-term, wrap each coupe in acid-free tissue and keep in a dry, temperature-stable environment to prevent clouding or damage.
