Prepare Work Area
Work on a clean, flat surface covered with a towel or protective paper. Have two shallow dishes or ramekins ready: one for the gold paint mixture and one for optional sugar.
- 3
Make Gold Paint
In one shallow dish, mix the edible gold luster dust with the clear alcohol (about 2 tsp gold to 2 tbsp alcohol). Stir with a small spoon or brush until you have a smooth, paint-like liquid. If using commercial gold cocktail rim paint, pour a small amount into the dish—no dilution needed unless manufacturer suggests.
- 4
Optional Sugar Rim Preparation
If you want a textured golden-sugar rim, pour the granulated sugar into the second shallow dish. You can also mix a pinch of gold luster dust with the sugar to tint it lightly. Set aside.
- 5
Wet the Glass Rim
Hold the first coupe by the stem and gently rub the lemon or lime wedge around the outer and inner edge of the rim (only a light touch is needed). For a cleaner, more controlled gold edge, wet just the very lip of the glass; for a fuller rim coverage, wet both the inner and outer lip.
- 6
Paint the Gold Rim
Dip the food-safe brush into the gold paint mixture and remove excess on the dish edge. Starting at one point, carefully brush a thin, even band of gold around the rim of the first coupe. Keep a steady hand and maintain consistent pressure for an even line. Repeat for all five glasses. Allow the first coat to dry for 5–10 minutes (alcohol will evaporate quickly). Apply a second thin coat if you want a richer, more opaque gold appearance. Avoid thick globs—thin layers give the best finish.
- 7
Add Sugared Texture (Optional)
If using sugar, immediately after painting (while the paint is still tacky), gently press the sugared ramekin against the painted rim or sprinkle the sugar over the rim so it adheres. Rotate the glass to get uniform coverage. Tap gently to remove excess sugar. If you mixed gold into the sugar, this will produce a gently sparkling, textured gold rim.
- 8
Drying and Curing
Place the finished coupes upright in a dust-free area and allow them to dry at room temperature for at least 1 hour. For best durability, let them cure for 12–24 hours before use. Note: edible gold painted with alcohol is delicate; treat rims with care and hand-wash gently.
- 9
Clean Up and Storage
Rinse brushes immediately with warm water and mild soap (if the gold product instructions allow). Wipe any spills from your work surface. Store the coupes upright in a cabinet away from heavy items; do not stack. Include a note for users: hand wash only, avoid scrubbing the gold rim—wipe gently with a soft cloth.
