Prepare workspace and safety
Work in a well-ventilated area or outdoors. Lay down cardboard or plastic to protect surfaces. Put on nitrile gloves and safety goggles. Have a container ready to collect used etching cream and paper towels for immediate cleanup.

Prepare artwork and stencils
Create or choose your etched design sized to fit the curved area of each Irish coffee mug (typically a 2.5–3.5 inch / 6–9 cm high band or emblem). Cut the design from the adhesive vinyl sheet using a craft cutter or by hand. Weed out the negative pieces so that the parts you want etched are exposed. Apply transfer tape to lift the stencil from its backing.

Apply stencil to mug
Position the stencil on the mug where you want the etch. For consistent placement across all five mugs, mark a guide point with removable masking tape on each mug (for example, center front or opposite handle). Use the transfer tape to place the stencil, then burnish firmly with a plastic scraper to remove bubbles and ensure full adhesive contact. Gently remove transfer tape, leaving the vinyl stencil adhered.

Mask off surrounding areas
Use masking tape or extra vinyl to cover and protect any areas you do not want etched (handle tops, rims). Make sure all stencil edges are fully sealed - press with the scraper or a credit card to prevent etching cream bleed.

Apply etching cream
Put on fresh nitrile gloves. Use a small plastic container or apply directly from the tube/jar. Using the plastic scraper or a small brush, apply a thick, even coat (about 1–2 mm) of etching cream over the exposed glass areas inside the stencil. Cover the entire design with no gaps. Do not get cream on parts you want to remain clear (rim/handle).

Developing time (follow product instructions)
Let the etching cream sit for the manufacturer-specified time. Typical etching creams require 1–5 minutes depending on strength and glass type; check the cream label. For a deeper etch, you can repeat the process after rinsing and reapplying, but do not exceed manufacturer's maximum recommended time.

Rinse and remove stencil
Place the mug under a gentle stream of cool water (preferably in an outdoor sink or tub) and rinse thoroughly until all etching cream is washed away. Use the small brush to help remove cream from crevices. Remove the vinyl stencil and wash the mug with warm soapy water to remove residue. Dry with a lint-free cloth.

Inspect and repeat (if desired)
Check the etched area for depth and consistency. If a deeper or more pronounced etch is desired, reapply stencil (or make a new one if vinyl degraded), and repeat the etching process once more, following the same steps and safety precautions.

Finishing touches
If any rough edges remain, refine lightly with a fine-grit sanding pad or polishing pad designed for glass—use very light pressure. Clean the mug again with rubbing alcohol and dry. If you applied any decorative vinyl bands, apply them now outside of the etched area. If using a clear sealant near the rim or lip, ensure it is food-safe for areas that may contact the mouth; otherwise, avoid sealing the inside of the rim.

Curing and care
Allow any optional sealants to cure per manufacturer's instructions (typically 24–72 hours). Wash etched mugs by hand for longevity; avoid dishwashers unless the manufacturer of the etching cream and any vinyl/paint indicates dishwasher safety. Store mugs safely to prevent scratching the etched area.

Dispose of waste safely
Collect used etching cream and contaminated wipes in the chemical-resistant container and follow local disposal regulations for corrosive chemicals. Clean tools with plenty of water while wearing gloves; do not pour concentrated cream down household drains unless permitted by product instructions.

Apply decorative vinyl bands
If adding decorative permanent vinyl bands, measure and cut strips to fit each mug. Clean and dry the area, apply transfer tape, position the band below the etched area or at the base, burnish firmly and remove transfer tape. Smooth any bubbles.

If you choose to apply a clear dishwasher-safe sealant to decorative elements, mask the rim to avoid contact with the mouth, apply a thin even coat, and allow to cure fully per product instructions.
