Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Steak

Take the Prime NY Strip Steak out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking. This helps to ensure even cooking.

  2. 2

    Season the Steak

Generously sprinkle both sides of the steak with kosher salt, freshly ground black pepper, and garlic powder. Pat the seasoning into the steak to ensure it sticks. Drizzle olive oil over the steak and rub it in.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Heat the Pan

Preheat a cast-iron skillet or heavy-bottomed pan over high heat for about 5 minutes until it is very hot.

  2. 4

    Sear the Steak

Once the pan is hot, place the seasoned steak into the pan. Sear for about 4-5 minutes on one side without moving it to develop a crust.

  3. 5

    Flip and Cook

Flip the steak using tongs and cook for an additional 4-5 minutes for medium-rare, or longer if you prefer it more done. If using, add a tablespoon of butter and a sprig of rosemary or thyme to the pan for flavor.

  4. 6

    Check for Doneness

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature. Aim for 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare.

  5. 7

    Rest the Steak

Remove the steak from the pan and let it rest on a cutting board for 5-10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute.

Serving

  1. 8

    Slice and Serve

Slice the steak against the grain and serve immediately. Enjoy your perfectly cooked Prime NY Strip!
