Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the glass

Select a lowball glass and chill it by placing it in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

  2. 2

    Char the orange peel

Using a kitchen torch, char the outer side of the orange peel until it is lightly browned. Be careful not to burn it too much.

Mixing

  1. 3

    Combine ingredients

In a mixing glass, add the bourbon or rye whiskey, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters.

  2. 4

    Stir

Fill the mixing glass with ice and stir the mixture for about 30 seconds until well chilled.

Assembly

  1. 5

    Strain into glass

Remove the chilled lowball glass from the freezer and add the large ice cube. Strain the mixed cocktail into the glass over the ice.

  2. 6

    Garnish

Take the charred orange peel and express the oils over the drink by holding it with the charred side facing downward and gently squeezing it. Add the charred peel and maraschino cherry to garnish.
