Fountain Soda (Self-Serve)

Method

Fountain Soda (Self-Serve)

  1. 1

    Prepare the cup

Select a clean glass or disposable cup and fill it about three-quarters full with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup).

  2. 2

    Dispense carbonated water

If using a soda fountain where carbonated water and syrup are separate, dispense 1 cup of carbonated water into the ice-filled cup. If the fountain mixes automatically, skip to dispensing syrup as directed by the dispenser controls.

  3. 3

    Add syrup

Add 2 tablespoons of cola syrup into the glass of carbonated water. For other flavors, substitute the appropriate fountain syrup in a similar amount or use the fountain's flavor button to dispense the correct ratio (follow on-machine markings if present).

  4. 4

    Stir gently

Use a stir stick or straw to gently stir the drink once to combine syrup and carbonated water, taking care to minimize foam and loss of carbonation.

  5. 5

    Garnish and serve

If desired, squeeze a lemon or lime wedge over the top and drop it in, or add a maraschino cherry or 1/2 teaspoon grenadine for a cherry-style soda. Serve immediately with a straw.

Bottled Soft Drink (single glass)

  1. 6

    Chill bottle

Ensure the bottled soft drink is well chilled (refrigerated to about 36–45°F / 2–7°C) before serving.

  2. 7

    Prepare serving glass

Select a clean glass and fill it about three-quarters full with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup).

  3. 8

    Pour bottled drink

Open the bottle and slowly pour 12 oz of the bottled soft drink over the ice to reduce foaming. Tilt the glass slightly and pour along the side if necessary.

  4. 9

    Optional garnish

Add a lemon or lime wedge if desired, or drop in a maraschino cherry or 1/2 tsp grenadine for a flavored variation.

  5. 10

    Serve

Insert a straw or stir stick and serve immediately to best retain carbonation.

Diet/Lighter Option

  1. 11

    Using diet bottled drink

If using a diet bottled soft drink, follow the same steps as 'Bottled Soft Drink' above: chill, prepare glass with ice, pour 12 oz over ice, garnish optional, and serve.

  2. 12

    Using zero-sugar fountain syrup

If using a zero-sugar fountain syrup that requires dilution, fill a glass with ice (about 1 cup), add 1 cup carbonated water, and add the recommended amount of zero-sugar syrup (follow machine markings; typical is 1–2 tbsp). Stir gently and serve.

Mixers & Garnishes

  1. 13

    Add grenadine or cherry

To make a cherry-style soda, add 1/2 teaspoon grenadine to the prepared soda and stir gently, or drop in a maraschino cherry. Adjust grenadine to taste but be mindful it will add sweetness.

  2. 14

    Final checks

Taste briefly to confirm sweetness and flavor. If syrup taste is weak (fountain), add an additional 1/2 tablespoon of syrup and stir. Serve immediately for best carbonation and flavor.
