Cook the Vegetables
In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

Form the Patty
In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form it into a patty that is slightly larger than the bread slices.

Cook the Patty
In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired doneness.

Grill the Sandwich
In another skillet or the same one (cleaned), melt another tablespoon of butter. Place two slices of bread in the skillet, then add the patty with toppings on one slice, and top with the other slice of bread. Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining sandwich.

Slice the patty melt in half and serve hot with your favorite side.
