Directions

  1. 1

    Cook the Vegetables

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

  2. 2

    Form the Patty

In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form it into a patty that is slightly larger than the bread slices.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patty

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and heat over medium-high heat. Cook the beef patty for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until it reaches your desired doneness.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Layer the sautéed mushrooms and onions on top of the cooked patty. Place one slice of American cheese and one slice of Swiss cheese on top of the vegetables.

  5. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

In another skillet or the same one (cleaned), melt another tablespoon of butter. Place two slices of bread in the skillet, then add the patty with toppings on one slice, and top with the other slice of bread. Grill until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted, about 3-4 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining sandwich.

  6. 6

    Serve

Slice the patty melt in half and serve hot with your favorite side.
