Method
If making simple syrup
- 1
Make simple syrup
Combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan. Heat gently over medium-low heat, stirring until sugar fully dissolves. Do not boil. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Store refrigerated in a sealed container for up to 2 weeks.

Measure ingredients
Place 1/4 oz simple syrup into a rocks glass (6–10 oz capacity). If you prefer, use one sugar cube instead of syrup and proceed to muddle with bitters.
- 3
Add bitters
Add 3 dashes Angostura bitters and 1 dash orange bitters directly onto the simple syrup (or onto the sugar cube if using).
- 4
Combine with whiskey
Pour 2 oz rye whiskey into the glass over the syrup and bitters.

- 6
Garnish
Express the oils of an orange peel over the glass by holding the peel skin-side down and giving it a quick squeeze to release the oils, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the glass. Optionally add one maraschino cherry on a pick.
- 7
Serve
Serve immediately on a rocks glass with the large ice cube. Offer a straw only if requested; traditionally served without one.
